Think of someone who’s spent all summer in Hawaii — skin deeply golden, hair naturally lightened, everything melting into one tone. That harmony is monochromatic colour. And while it often reads beachy, it doesn’t have to be. The same principle applies to polished, wintery, or high-fashion hair — just executed in a different tonal range. Monochromatic colour works on almost everyone, but it must be customized per person.

A winter monochromatic look will use entirely different tones than a summer version — even on the same client. Cooler undertones, denser pigment, less reflect. The goal stays the same, though: to enhance the skin, eyes, and natural lip colour so the entire face reads intentional.

Choosing the right reference matters

When searching for inspiration, skin tone is everything. You need to find reference photos of someone with a similar complexion, not just a haircut or vibe you like. The skin is what creates the cohesiveness — without it, the colour will miss. Also remember: hair always looks darker when it’s wet. Never judge tone until the hair is completely dry. What feels too deep mid-process often lands perfectly once finished.

There are multiple ways to arrive at a monochromatic result, and the approach depends entirely on the starting point. In some cases, it’s as simple as a base adjustment or a gloss. In more time-intensive situations, it may require a full bleach-out before rebuilding tone.

Maintenance varies depending on the method used, which is why a thorough consultation is essential. Your colourist should guide you toward the route that makes sense for your hair — not force a technique that doesn’t belong. This look is about restraint, not overworking.

Pink hair will forever have a special place in my heart. When I was an assistant and being promoted to the floor at Sally Hershberger Los Angeles, the salon management told me, “Pink hair is a waste of time. Nobody in the real world will actually pay you for pink hair. Pink hair is not high-end.” It was just the next year that Chanel had their Cruise 2013 runway show with pastel hair on nearly every model. The show took place at Versailles and had pink, blue, lavender, mint, and silver hair strutting down the catwalk. Fantasy hair will always be a passion of mine; it helped give me the confidence of knowing that when my passion meets my skill set, I am goals.

After being a colourist for over 10 years, traveling the world for private clients, teaching my techniques internationally, and launching products globally, I do see things in a bit of a different light. In this industry, I believe that if you do not have that intuitive passion, then it’s extremely hard to become a success story. Painting on hair is not only my passion, but it is how I pay my bills. To put it frankly, time is money—when I’m behind that chair, every minute counts. After years of growing my career and furthering my business, I realize now more than ever that time is of the essence.

I’m a quick learner, and it didn’t take me long to realize what my manager meant when she said, “Pink hair is a waste of time.” Though I don’t entirely agree with this statement, I do see from the business side why this could be a salon manager’s perspective. I’ve worked as an artist in some of the most elite salons worldwide, and I’ve always been on a commission arrangement. To break things down a bit and help you understand the logistics of a fantasy colour service — it’s a triple service, and that’s only after the initial correction of creating the colour (usually a 10-hour service). That’s just a retouch. Said retouch is the “easy” part of maintaining a fantasy colour, and it takes about three times longer than a normal service does.

Oftentimes, the clientele asking for these fantasy colours tend to be younger. Aside from giant pop stars and editorial projects, the clients requesting fantasy colours are generally clients who are not paying for their own service, and perhaps their parents or guardians are. These younger clients are on less of a time crunch. Now, I definitely don’t discriminate; however, if the time it takes to create these fantasy looks isn’t matched with the service fees, then I can see how it can feel like a waste of time. Sometimes, as an artist, it’s difficult to charge appropriately for the services required.

MAINTAIN FANTASY COLOUR

Proper shampoo and conditioner are key to maintaining a fantasy colour. It’s crucial to use products that won’t strip the colour — or as little as possible.

REFRESH COLOUR

Most clients with fantasy colours tend to gloss themselves at home because, unlike most colours, pink hair requires the hair to be completely platinum underneath in order to be true to the pastel tone. Due to the process of getting to that platinum level of lightness, the colour molecules fall out of the hair fast.

THERMAL STYLING PRODUCTS

Professional thermal styling products are a huge part of instigating a fantasy colour to fade. All heat will fade colours, but since pastels are platinum underneath, the heat destroys the pigment. Using a thermal styling tool with a heat adjuster will help maintain the colour as well as the integrity of the hair.

Balayage is misunderstood. More often than not, hairstylists themselves don’t fully comprehend what balayage truly is. Clients frequently come in requesting “balayage, not highlights,” when in reality, that’s impossible. Balayage is a technique used to highlight (or lowlight)—it’s a freehand form of painting.

The word balayage is French and means “to sweep,” so think of it exactly that way: sweeping the chemical onto the surface of the hair, much like a broom drags dust from one point to another. Balayage became widely requested because it can mimic the sheer, natural lightness you see in children’s virgin hair. It became popular as social media platforms expanded (@biancacolour ) show casing the artistic possibilities with this technique.

One of the biggest misconceptions about balayage is that it’s a look. It’s not—it’s a technique. Many people assume balayage refers to a colour style that’s darker at the root and gradually lighter toward the ends. While that can be a balayage aesthetic, it’s not the definition. Balayage is not just an ombré; it’s a skill.

I assisted a woman named Sulekha Hilton, who was—and still is—exceptionally talented. She taught me everything I know about hair. When I worked with her, she used both foiling and balayage methods. I remember thinking that balayage simply looked more expensive and more natural. When clients returned for their follow-up appointments, their hair always looked less haggard than clients who had been fully foiled.

I’ve built my career using my freehand, signature technique with cotton. If someone wants a foil look, a great balayage artist can paint to replicate that effect. The reverse, however, is not possible. Achieving this level of precision requires intention—I’m extremely particular about my tools because there are specific items I cannot get the same results without.

My go-to tint brush is the Framar Triple Threat set. The brushes are small and firm, which allows me to paint precise lines and control exactly how much lightener is applied to the hair. The Framar Paddle has a side with grip and a side that allows slip, this versatility is perfect for my large clientele.

Cotton is essential in my application. I use it as a divider when painting to prevent bleed marks. Unlike foils or plastic, cotton doesn’t conduct heat, allowing the lightener to process at the formulated pace. This keeps the hair looking natural and sun-kissed. Foils, in particular, can make hair look tinsely and cause the lightener to aggressively eat through the hair, whereas cotton protects the ribboned pieces I’m painting.

Clients part their hair in very specific ways. I always keep a large comb on my tray so clients can part their hair themselves. This allows me to paint exactly where they part, eliminating dark holes when they leave my chair and style themselves at home.

Every section I paint gets combed through to remove tangles. Any knot in the hair can create an air pocket, causing uneven lift and leaving behind a darker spot that will be obvious. I section with the utmost precision to ensure that I can follow the exact same pattern in a following session.

A wet towel is always within reach. If my brush has too much product on it, I clean it completely before touching dry hair. This keeps my application controlled, clean, and precise.

These heavy duty clips securely hold large sections of hair out of the way while I work. Clean partings and tight sections are non-negotiable when it comes to precision.

I keep slide clips on my tray at all times. They’re small, comfortable for the client, and perfect for securing baby hairs and refining sections that alligator clips can’t manage.

Pin curl clips are essential for smaller sections and for securing plastic bags while highlights process under heat.

I always wear gloves for protection. We’re dealing with chemicals on a daily basis, so it’s important to take care of your body and your health. These Product Club gloves go high up on my wrist, and I prefer the material and fit over every other brand.

The Sedu Revolution Pro dryer is compact, powerful, and consistent. I use it specifically to heat highlights and give the lightener a controlled boost.

This Ys Park diffuser bag distributes heat evenly across the head and fits perfectly over the Sedu dryer. It retains heat without allowing it to escape and blow my painting around.

These thicker plastic bags are ideal for processing highlights. They’re transparent, easy to tear, and hold heat far better than Saran Wrap. I plastic wrap up the highlights when I’m done painting to instigate a faster processing time. Saran Wrap shrivels up when heat gets too close so these bags are a perfect alternative.

Saran Wrap has its place. I use it when working on clients with extremely dark hair who are going blonde, as it conducts heat and speeds up processing without creating a tinsely finish. If the ends are already blonde, I only apply the wrap to the darker new growth zone.

What balayage once was has evolved into something more creative, more customized, and more impactful than ever before. It’s no longer just a trend—it’s a skill set that continues to shape the industry.

Pantone decided 2026 colour of the year is Platinum Cloud. When you think of “platinum,” you automatically think of something luminous, elegant, almost metallic—light and silvery. When you think of “cloud,” it gives you the idea of a cool, pale, muted, and atmospheric tone.

In terms of hair, this is one of the most difficult colours not only to perfect but to achieve at all. Considering the colour spectrum carries from 1 being darkest (black) and 10 being the most pale (platinum), it’s nearly impossible not to break the hair on the journey to a platinum colour. Choosing the right colourist is key in this matter. If the services are not performed with superior knowledge and a quick pace, you’re pretty much doomed from the start. I’ve been colouring hair for over a decade now, and I’ve developed some signature tips that you won’t see in any ordinary salon. My platinum clients have long, thick, white hair with no breakage.
